Top spots along Turkey’s coast

Cesme peninsula, Aegean: Turkey’s coast is one of its greatest assets, drawing tourists to the country from all over the world. If you’re heading to Turkey for the sea, it’s definitely advisable to head to the secluded area and boutique hotels of the Cesme peninsula on the Aegean coast. In Alacti are vineyards, olive groves and lavender plantations. To the north of the region is the seaside resort of Assos, which is really charming. Spring time is the right time to go, especially if you like windsurfing.

Selimiye, Bozburun peninsula: There really are few locations in Turkey that are as idyllic as Selimiye. Only an hour away from the bustling Marmaris, Selimiye is a one-street village where all activity is clustered around the seafront. There are steep hills surrounding the inlet, so the water is really calm and crystal clear. Recommended restaurants include Sardunya on the seafront, which has its own jetty. Otherwise there is one carpet store, a handful of beachwear boutiques and a few jewellery stores and craft shops. Do check out the village market, which takes place every Wednesday, and where you can find nuts, cheeses, olives and stalls laden with Turkish fabrics.

Yalikavak, Bodrum peninsula: Yalikavak is a small town on the north west of the Bodrum peninsula. Here in the north it is still possible to find such picturesque villages where old traditions co-exist comfortably alongside a modern lifestyle. Yalikavak is a favourite among Turkish city dwellers. The town is centred around its small harbour, with a 300 year old windmill to one side. Restaurants line the seafront and there’s also a great art gallery to visit, unusually housed in an old water cistern.
